A German report supports the use of quinolones for the treatment of acute exacerbations of COPD
A study published by staff in a clinic in Bochum, Germany, has examined the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary (COPD). In the case of patients with acute exacerbations admitted to ICU the most common pathogens involved are H. influenzae and S. pneumoniae. Although treatment remains controversial, guidelines advocate the following as empirical treatment: quinolones, penicillins + a beta-lactamase inhibitor and 2nd and 3rd generation cephalosporins.
