A Swiss study shows that quinolones are increasingly used over trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole for the treatment of urinary tract infection

A study carried out by investigators in the Institute of Infectious Diseases, University of Bern, Switzerland, has looked at prescribing patterns for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infection.
A national Sentinel surveillance system was used to study 11,799 antibiotic prescriptions for UTI in adult outpatients over the period 2006 to 2008. Quinolones tended to be prescribed rather than trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, if the patients suffered from pyelonephritis or if the treating physicians had a low threshold for antibiotic prescribing – so-called high prescribers.
