A new Italian study shows that levofloxacin prophylaxis is effective prophylaxis for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation Blood stream infections (BSI) are common after allogenic stem cell transplantation and this study by investigators in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Cancer Epidemiology Unit, Turin, Italy, examined the nature and incidence of BSI in 269 consecutive patients undergoing allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The crude mortality and morbidity rates associated with BSI were only 3% suggesting that, despite the emergence of antibiotic resistance, prophylaxis with levofloxacin is a very appealing approach and the authors suggest further evaluation in randomized studies.
