Ciprofloxacin no longer drug of choice for Gram-negative infections in Saudia Arabia

A retrospective investigation of ciprofloxaxcin resistance patterns of Gram-negative bacteria in laboratory specimens at King Fahd Hospital, Alkhobar, Saudia Arabia, was carried out for the period January 2002 to August 2005.
There was a gradual increase in resistance rates over this period e.g. E. coli from 23.9% to 33.1%, P. aeruginosa from 17.0% to 39.5% and H. influenzae from 0.0% to 11.1%.
These findings show that ciprofloxacin is no longer the drug of choice in Saudi Arabia for the treatment of Gram-negative infections.
