Levofloxacin-based therapy superior to standard triple regimens for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori

Spanish investigators in the Department of Gastroenterology, San Pedro de Alcantara Hospital, Caceres, Spain, have examined the effects clarithromycin and levofloxacin in triple and sequential first-line regimens in 460 patients wiith H. pylori infections.
The best results were obtained in the groups receiving levofloxacin-based and sequentital therapy compared with starndard triple therapy schemes. The perprotocol cure rates in most of the groups given levofloxacin were over 80%. There were no marked differences between the groups in terms of compliance or adverse events.
