First report of M. pneumoniae-associated mucositis successfully treated with levofloxacin

A report from staff in the Unit of Internal Medicine 1, Hospital Curry Cabral, Lisbon, Portugal, describes a case of Mycoplasma pneumoniae-associated mucositis which is a rare complication of M. pneumoniae infection exhibiting ocular, oral and genital involvement.

It affected a 27-year-old male with a history of asthma who presented at an emergency room with a one-week history of cough, fever, myalgia, headache and progressive dyspnea. He was given amoxicillin/clavulanic acid but his condition did not respond. However he was successfully treated with a combination of levofloxacin and prednisolone. This is the first reported instance of a case of M. pneumoniae-associated mucositis treated with levofloxacin and prednisolone. The authors recommend that this treatment should be considered for all cases of Mycoplasma pneumoniae-associated mucositis.
