Levofloxacin remains highly effective against community-acquired Viridans group streptococci
Recent reports describe an increasing number of infections due to antimicrobial-resistant viridans group streptococci and researchers at the Division of Infectious Diseases, Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI, have examined 28 community-acquired viridans group streptococci isolates from 27 patients. Although these isolates exhibited different degrees of resistance to a variety of antibiotics, including cefalosporins, macrolides and penicillin, all strains remained 100% susceptible to levofloxacin and vancomycin.
