Levofloxacin combined with quinupristin-dalfopristin shown to be an effective treatment for multiresistant E. faeciums

Multidrug-resistant strains of Enterococcus faecium are becoming increasingly common and new treatment combinations are needed. Researchers in the Departments of Cardiology and Microbiology, Virgen de la Arrixaca University Hospital, Murcia, Spain, have compared the efficacy of quinupristin-dalfopristin alone and in combination with gentamicin, teicoplanin, imipenem or levofloxacin against a strain of multidrug resistant E. faecium using an experimental model of aortic valve endocarditis in rabbits.

They found that the combination with levofloxacin or imipenem was a suitable alternative treatment.
