Levofloxacin effective in children with recurrent or persistent acute otitis media

An international group of researchers have carried out an open-label, double tympanocentesis multicentric trial of levofloxacin in children with, or at high risk of, recurrent or persistent acute otitis media. The tympanocentesis was carried out at entry and selectively 3 to 5 days after starting levofloxacin treatment (10 mg/twice daily for 10 days).

A total of 205 children were enrolled and bacterial eradication was obtained in 88% including 90% of the children aged 24 months or less. The overall clinical success rate after treatment was 94% for the total study group and 92% for the bacteriologically evaluable population. The authors propose levofloxacin as a safe and effective treatment for children with this condition.
